The Brother 1034D is one of the cheapest and yet fully functioning serger on the market today. The most important thing to understand about a serger is that it is only as good as the stitch functions it knows to use. That is because, unlike a sewing machine, the serger does everything you would want to do with it automatically so it is less about your skill level and more about how well the serger itself is built. The Brother 1034D has 22 stitch functions, and can use either a 4 or a 3 thread overlock. It can created either a narrow or rolled hem, it has separate ribbon stitches for regular wear and for formal or bridal wear. And it also has several different fabric feeds to allow you to use anything from suede to silk.

The Brother Designio Series is the Brother 1034D elder brother in every way including the fact that it is a bit more expensive but also the fact that it has earned a superior 4.7 star rating on Amazon from almost 50 customers. It does everything the Brother 1034D does but it comes also comes with a blind hem stitch foot, piping foot and gathering foot. These accessories bring an even wider range of fabrics that you can use and types of stitching that you can do. It also comes with color coded threading points so you can thread it without any problems even if you have never owned or used a serger before. It also comes with a manual and instructional videos that beginner sergers will certainly get a lot of use out of.

In the serger market there are only 2 brands that truly dominate the market through the quality of their machines: Brother and Singer. The Singer 14J250 is the entry level serger from this manufacturer and immediately you can see that it is more expensive than the Brother ones. However it does several new features including the possibility to use 2, 3 or 4 stitches at the same time. They also use a differential feed system for each thread which eliminates stretching of the fabric. We also love the fact that the Singer 14J250 has a high performance cutting gauge that cuts the fabric perfectly straight at the same length.
4. JUKI MO644D Portable Serger

There are several reasons why the Juki MO644D is an interesting alternative to these other big brand name sergers. For one it is the smallest serger you can buy and, although it is a bit of a stretch to call it a portable serger, it is light enough that you can move it out of the way when you are done with it. As far as its features are concerned it is quite an impressive machine, with 2, 3, and 4 stitching options available to it. It comes with a single multipurpose foot but you can buy separately several other presser feet that will ultimately allow you to achieve the same variety in sergering as you would with any of the other products we have reviewed.
5. SINGER 14CG754 ProFinish 2-3-4 Thread Serger

The final product we are going to review in our search for the best serger of 2014 is the Singer 14CG754. It has a 2, 3 and 4 stitching capability, and a pressure level knob to allow you to tackle any type of fabric. Despite its relatively low price the 14CG754 is still a Singer product and therefore comes with that wonderful differential feed system that allows you to serge through any material without stretching it. However, it only comes with a multi-purpose foot so you will need to buy separately other feet as your abilities and needs in using the serger progress.
