The McLane 801 5.50GT is, by far, the most powerful and the most useful lawn edger that we were able to find and that was worth the money. In our opinion the McLane 801 5.50GT is a tool that you only need to buy if you have an extra-large lawn with very peculiar edging requirements. It is the best lawn edger that money can buy in 2014, but it may be a bit of an overkill for people with regular sized lawns. It has a 3.5 horse power motor and it is capable of developing 4.75 gross-torque. It uses a 9 inch blade with a single level clutch and it has independent depth control. That all basically translates into an edger that does not overheat regardless of the length of the edge you are trimming. It also can be adjusted to clear any size curve and it uses ball bearing wheels for a very smooth drive.

If you do have a huge lawn but cannot really afford something as expensive as the McLane, the Black & Decker MTC220 may be the best option for you. In fact it is so inexpensive that we believe it is the perfect blend of quality and price and, unless you really need to go as cheap as possible, you should go with this edger. It has earned a 4.4 star rating on Amazon from more than 140 customers because it is so versatile. You can use it as a trimmer, as a mower and as an edger and it does a pretty good job with all those functions. It is not the most comfortable edger you could buy, but it works very well and it does an even better job as a mower so you do not really have to worry too much about the edges. It has a power drive transmission that works very well to prevent the system from bogging down and it comes with a spare battery so you can keep on mowing for as long as it takes to finish the job.

If you still believe that you need something as powerful as the McLane we have already talked about, but are looking to get those capabilities at as a low a price as possible, you may be interested in the McLane 101-4.75GT. It has the same powerful 4.75 gross torque engine that will keep the blade spinning regardless of how thick or challenging the edge of the lawn may be. The reason why the McLane 101-4.75GT is somewhat more affordable, is because they used smaller 7 inch wheels, although that should not be a problem unless you are dealing with a field in the mountains rather than one in a civilized suburbia.

There is one other Black & Decker lawn edger that we need to talk about, the LST136W. It can be easily converted from a trimmer to an edger and we were particularly impressed with the Automatic Feed Spool technology. It is a very simple device that keeps you from trying to cut into the cement or stone of the sidewalk and it uses the edge of the sidewalk to help you create a perfectly straight line. The cutting string is also of the very best quality and it does not overheat when you are using it in edger mode. In fact we should point out the fact that close to 1,000 customers were so impressed with it that they gave the Black & Decker LST136W a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.

The last lawn edger we are going to feature here is the Black and Decker LST420, and it is our low cost solution for those of you who have not made a passion out of keeping the lawn perfect. That is not to say it will not do an excellent job, but that it does have some drawbacks like a 20 V, 2 Amp battery. It should be more than enough to deal with any type of grass and weeds but the battery may not last long enough for you to finish the lawn if you have a particularly big yard. Still, the price is small enough and the Black and Decker LST420 also doubles as a trimmer, so it is well worth the money.
